Centipedes We Commonly See

House Centipedes

House centipedes, scientifically known as Scutigera coleoptrata, are arthropods that often evoke mixed reactions from humans.

Despite their creepy appearance, these centipedes can actually be beneficial inhabitants of our homes.

Habitat – They are commonly found in damp environments such as basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces.

Food – House centipedes are nocturnal predators, feasting on a wide range of insects including spiders, cockroaches, silverfish, and termites. Their lightning-fast speed and numerous legs enable them to chase down and capture their prey with ease.

Appearance – Although their presence may startle some individuals, house centipedes are generally harmless to humans and prefer to avoid direct contact.

Their elongated bodies are segmented and equipped with numerous legs, giving them a distinct appearance.

House centipedes have a pale yellow or grayish-brown coloration with dark stripes running down their bodies.

While their appearance may be intimidating, it’s important to remember their beneficial role in controlling other household pests.
