Don’t let squirrels wreak havoc by gnawing through your home and wiring. Eastern Pine Pest & Wildlife can help.
On a scale of one to 10, squirrels rank right towards the top end in terms of the cuteness factor. But don’t be fooled. They rank even higher for the nuisance factor!
Squirrels can cause great damage to your home. Those tiny paws are incredibly sharp and can claw clean through siding and roof material. As for those adorable nut-nibbling teeth? They can chew right through electrical wires, leaving your home a mess and your maintenance requirements and bills sky high.
Fortunately, Eastern Pine’s wildlife techs are experts in finding squirrel trailing and nesting sites and determining the smartest, gentlest approach to both excluding them from your home – and then keeping them out. (Allowing you to continue admiring their cuteness with none of the nuisance or cost to your home!)
Most Common Squirrel Types
Next to mice, squirrels are the second most common rodent to wreak havoc in our homes. The three most common squirrels we deal with are:
Eastern Grey Squirrels
As the most commonly seen species of squirrel in Massachusetts, grey squirrels are most often spotted in daylight hours running along fences and tree limbs in search of nuts and food. When they’re done all that running? They need to hunker down somewhere warm – like a nest in your home.
While Eastern Grey Squirrels have been known to nest in our homes year round, you are more likely to see them in attic spaces or wall voids in the Fall, as temperatures start to drop and warmer nesting spots become necessary.
Northern Flying Squirrels
Northern Flying Squirrels come with a whole host of potential problems:
- Their colonies can contain upwards of 30 squirrels – and trust us when we tell you, we’ve seen that many in our clients’ homes more times than we care to count!
- They are the smallest of the squirrel types, and with that pint size comes easy access to your home. Their bodies can actually fit into gaps as small as a quarter, making it incredibly easy for them to get into the smallest of spaces in your attic and home.
- In addition to their small size, their ability to ‘fly’ makes getting into your home even easier. FYI: despite their name, flying squirrels do not actually fly. Instead, they glide: when they spread out their arms and legs, their excess skin creates a type of cape which allows them to jump off tree limbs or other tall structures and glide down to their target landing spot – which more often than not is the roofs of our homes.
- In spite of their small size, these squirrels are also known for making a massive noise – in fact they are the noisiest of the squirrels we encounter. Many clients report excessive noise from flying squirrels nesting in their homes, which can be explained by the fact that early in the morning, they bounce around together in attic spaces where they’re nesting.
All of this – the tiny size, their gliding and jumping ability, and the propensity to make a massive noise – means Northern Flying Squirrels can be a real nuisance.
American Red Squirrels
Often confused with chipmunks, it’s important to remember that if you think you’ve seen a chipmunk on your roof, there’s a very strong chance it’s actually a red squirrel. Why does it matter? Because red squirrels are one of the most destructive rodent species in Massachusetts.
They’re well known for chewing through hard wood, vinyl siding and soffits. What’s more, they have the patience, perseverance and power to claw and chew through even the sturdiest of materials even if it takes hours to do so!
How can Eastern Pine Pest & Wildlife service help with your squirrels problem?
The best approach to squirrel exclusion is to avoid them entering your home in the first place, so call our experts sooner rather than later to ensure your house is shored up and squirrel-proof. Too late? Either way, Eastern Pine can help.
Eastern Pine’s wildlife techs are experts in finding squirrel trailing and nesting sites and determining the smartest, gentlest approach to both excluding them from your home – and then keeping them out.
Sometimes their entry points are a quick and easy to find. Other times, it can be tricky, in which case we set up trail cams to suspected entry/trailing sites to determine how to properly solve the issue. Either way, we know what to do and can solve your squirrel situation.
Once we’ve determined how the squirrels are entering your living space, we set to work removing them using one-way doors to safely exclude them from your home. Using professional grade materials, we will also work to tightly seal up existing entry points along with any additional areas we find to avoid further issues from new entry points.
Once we’re finished, any damaged areas due to squirrel chewing will look good as new, and you can rest assured that your house is squirrel-proof against future invasion.
